Boy, 14, dies after injecting himself with butterfly in viral online challenge

Teen Dies After Attempting Deadly Internet Challenge

In a tragic incident, 14-year-old Davi Nunes Moreira from Brazil died after injecting a mixture containing crushed butterfly wings into his leg—part of a suspected viral internet challenge.

Initially hiding the truth, Davi later confessed to hospital staff after symptoms like vomiting and limping worsened. Despite medical efforts, he died after a painful seven-day struggle in February.

Experts suspect the injection caused an embolism, infection, or allergic reaction. An investigation is ongoing to determine if toxins from the butterfly caused organ failure or septic shock.

Butterfly specialist Marcelo Duarte noted that little is known about the toxicity of butterfly fluids to humans.

This case highlights the growing dangers of viral challenges, especially among teens. In a related incident, a Brazilian influencer nearly lost a leg last year while chasing online fame.
