My Mom Always Controlled My Entire Life, but What She Did to Ruin My Wedding Crossed the Line — Story of the Day

My mom controlled every part of my life—from the clothes I wore to the college I “didn’t” get into. Turns out, I did get accepted to NYU, but she hid the letter so I’d stay home. “You’d leave me,” she cried when I found out. So I stayed.

She sabotaged every relationship—once even calling the cops on my boyfriend. Eventually, I snapped, and she introduced me to Colin, who surprisingly stuck around. We fell in love, got engaged, and started planning a life together—until my mom hijacked our wedding and insisted she’d live with us.

When we pushed back, she suddenly got “sick.” We canceled everything and poured money into her care. But when I took her to a new doctor, we discovered she was perfectly healthy. She admitted she faked it to keep me from leaving.

That was my breaking point. I packed a bag, texted Colin, and walked out. As she screamed behind me, I knew I was finally free. I wasn’t sure if I’d cut ties forever—but for the first time, I chose me.
